We have all been there…break ups. There’s something strangely healing about watching other people go through heartbreak when you’re in the middle of your own. It just makes you feel less alone and more relatable.

Whether it’s a bad breakup, a messy romantic relationship, or an already strained friendship, Netflix has so many breakup movies that’ll help you cry, laugh, and maybe even feel hopeful again.

Researching for this post was so much fun because honestly, my memory is like an old lady’s and I couldn’t recall half the names of breakup movies I’ve seen over the years. So this was the perfect excuse to rewatch these gems and relive the drama, the tears, and those satisfying post-breakup transformations.

Winter is approaching and the weather is perfect for warm popcorn, cozy blankets and socks, fireplace and Netflix with your favourite people.

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet bring so much emotion to this heartbreaking film about love, memory, and pain. Joel and Clementine’s story is a reminder that even when we try to erase a broken heart, the feelings always find their way back. With haunting set design and unforgettable scenes content, it’s easily one of the best breakup movies on Netflix and one of the best films ever made about love and loss.

2. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Jason Segel, Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, and Russell Brand make this romantic comedy one of the most relatable breakup movies of all time. When Peter gets dumped by his girlfriend Sarah Marshall, he flies to Hawaii for a fresh start, only to run into her new man. The opening breakup scene of this movie is pure chaos and comedy gold. It’s the perfect cure for a bad breakup, showing that laughter really is the best medicine.

3. Legally Blonde

Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods gives us the ultimate post-breakup transformation story. After her boyfriend leaves her to chase his perfect life at Harvard Law School, Elle turns heartbreak into motivation and proves she’s unstoppable. Between her pink outfits, her dream job, and her Harvard success, this film adaptation is everything you need when you’re ready to glow up after heartbreak.

4. How Stella Got Her Groove Back

Angela Bassett and Whoopi Goldberg are pure magic in this film about rediscovery and fresh starts. After a tough breakup, Stella heads to Jamaica and meets a much younger man played by Taye Diggs. Sanaa Lathan also appears, adding even more star power. With a beautiful San Francisco setting and feel-good vibes, this one reminds you that life doesn’t end after heartbreak, it gets better.

5. 500 Days of Summer

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel play two people with very different ideas of love. This isn’t your typical romantic comedy, it’s raw, real, and sometimes painfully accurate. Set in New York City, it’s about falling for the idea of someone, not who they really are. If you’ve ever experienced unrequited love or a confusing situationship, you’ll relate deeply to this story of emotional responses and self-discovery.

6. Eat Pray Love

I mean, Julia Roberts is always amazing and this is also a classic that I watched many times because it is so comforting, and Bali is one of my favourites places on Earth. She stars as a woman who leaves behind her perfect life to find herself after a devastating breakup. Traveling through Italy, India, and Bali, she reconnects with food, faith, and freedom. This movie is like therapy for the soul and one of the most inspiring breakup movies on Netflix. It’s the kind of love story that begins within.

7. Someone Great

I absolutely love this movie and for a long time it was my favourite. I relate to this one so so much, not anymore but definitely resonated to so many parts of my life and they portray all the nuances and dynamics so well.

Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow, and DeWanda Wise bring heart, humor, and sisterhood to this Netflix Original about heartbreak and healing. After Violet Jones (Gina’s character) loses her relationship and dream job in one swoop, she turns to her best friends to pick up the pieces. Featuring a killer soundtrack with Adam Levine and moments that feel straight off TikTok, this is a must-watch for every young woman rediscovering herself.

8. A Star Is Born

I love how multi talented Lady Gaga is. A true superstar and I love her! Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s chemistry is unreal in this tragic love story that explores fame, addiction, and heartbreak. The music, the performances, and those emotional scenes make it one of the best breakup movies on Netflix right now. You’ll probably end up searching for bonus videos and exclusive interviews afterward just to recover emotionally.

9. The Incredible Jessica James

Jessica Williams stars as a bold and confident playwright trying to move on from a bad breakup. Along the way, she meets a man played by Chris O’Dowd, and their connection becomes a reminder that love doesn’t always follow the same script. This Netflix gem captures the ups and downs of dating trials, new relationships, and what it really means to find yourself again.

10. Under the Tuscan Sun

Diane Lane stars as a newly divorced writer who buys a villa in Italy to start over, proving that heartbreak can lead to the most unexpected adventures. With gorgeous set design, emotional storytelling, and unforgettable scenes featuring Sandra Oh, this one is perfect for when you need to believe in second chances again.
