From the New York Times:
Nazi propaganda dwelled on Hitler as a dog lover. He owned two German shepherds named Bella and Blondi. He tested a cyanide capsule on Blondi and killed her just before he committed suicide.
Notice that Maureen Dowd doesn't even mention Eva Braun, just Hitler's dogs. I seem to recall that Eva got poisoned, too. Just doesn't enter Dowd's mind to mention that.

Dowd never though this one through.
My guess is she's in the "killing is always wrong" camp, probably while refusing to consider state execution or assassination to be "killing".

Posted by: Martha Bridegam on July 14, 2011 12:49 AMI suspect it's more brainwashed than narcissistic.
Goebbels poisoned his six children and then popped off with his wife to have themselves shot. I suspect a typical American family in the 1950s might do the same if they were in a bunker, their country collapsed and burning, and the Russian army was about to kick in the door. The phrase "better dead than red" comes to mind.
Take a look at this portrait of Hitler with his dog Blondi painted by the Austrian cartoonist Gerhard Haderer:
One man, one dog, one ball! ;-)
