There’s not much more to say about this song, although Warner Music refuses to allow the original sung by Dylan to be released on Youtube. This rendition by Eddie, Mike and GE Smith is better performed than Dylan did it anyway.
I would note that religion crept into these folk songs during the folk revival of the early 1960 quite often. I believe that the “early” folk singers understood that they needed to appeal to a broad audience and bring a broader group into their way of seeing things and into a higher level of social consciousness, so they added a few lyrics for that purpose. My apologies to the atheists.
