They’ll Do It Again…

I was tempted to put up three polls, one each for 2000, 2004, and 2008. But that might drown the point.

Unless you answered “Who cares?”, I very highly recommend that you read Mark Crispin Miller’s post on how the Rove machine might pull it off. Miller wrote such books as The Bush Dyslexicon and Fooled Again, and has been following this critical issue in detail for years.

My takeaway was that their methods have progressed from 2004 to now, just as they did from 2000 to 2004. They’re ruthlessly good at voter caging; Republicans in some states are trying to keep people from voting if their houses have been foreclosed on, for example. After all, how many familes in foreclosure are gonna vote Republican?

The Democrats have begun returning fire but are hesitant to call this what it is, attempted subversion of the electoral process. Like they were in 2000 and 2004.

One might extract several morals from this story. Most simply, there’s the eternal story of greed and lust for power that motivates so many political figures. On both sides. Then there’s the continuously stunning revelations of how low the Rove machine will sink, and how hapless the Democrats appear in response.

Perhaps most importantly, there’s the consideration that if enough people actually go to the polls and vote, Republican cheating won’t matter.

They already are. Just look at all the purging of voter rolls in states with Republican governors.

Personally, I think an Obama Justice Department should aggressively and in a non partisan way prosecute any high level state executives who have engaged in subverting the voting process. And if there are any Democrats engaging in such practices, they should also be prosecuted. Without the integrity of the vote, we are not a Democracy. We are a Stalinist style state.

And I just got the following in my inbox with a short introductory letter. I'll leave off the name of who sent it to me to protect their privacy. But be aware and if you have this happen to you or a relative, report it to the Obama campaign:

Subject: *ALERT: V o t e r ... S u p p r e s s i o n -- Please forward

The story is all over Progressive Talk Radio today about the McCain campaign

sending absentee ballot applications to registered democrats or people that have
donated to Obama's campaign. These ballots are deliberately misleading and
have postage paid return addresses that are for an election clerk that is
outside of your city or town. What this will end up doing is either having
your vote not counted, or if you return one of these, they will cite you for
election fraud, saying that you already voted absentee. These ballots are only
being sent out in 'purple states' and this is a big deal.. This is
called voter caging, and is a huge problem.

The McCain campaign is stealing this election as we speak. Please get this
information out to as many people as you can ,and tell anyone you know who has
received one of these ballots that they need to contact their city election
clerk or the supervisor of elections immediately. Also call the local media
and let them know what is going on. The main stream media is never going to
cover this so we have to depend on our ground campaign to get the word out to
our voters.

(sorry for the line breaks, I'd clean them up by I have to leave to go out of town and I'm already late)
