One of the True Faiths

I haven’t paid as much attention to the Tom Cruise-Scientology nexus as I should have. This video brought me up to speed, and I hope it will do the same for you. There are only two words to describe the effect it had on me: “holy” and “shit.”

Once the initial bemusement passed, though, I began to wonder how a Martian would react to a video of a not-too-bright Christian or Jew or Muslim or Hindu or Buddhist babbling on about his own One True Faith.

Change a few words and you could find persons who talk about their own one true ideology in similar terms, instead of talking about religion, . For instance conservatives. They just knew that the "free market" was the true answer. Eric Hoffer had all these folks described pretty well in the only book he wrote that I found appealing "The True Believer".

Ayn Rand True Believers like Greenspan, same deal. Communists, same deal. I could go on and on but I think the point has been made.

Hoffer says once they abandon their "true ideology", they flip to something else. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. But I do wonder what the free market conservatives will do now. Some will go on believing, some may settle into reality eventually, but some may come up latching onto a belief system equally as dangerous. And despite all that, I do hope some angel can come forward and direct the storm. But I'm not hopeful.

How amazingly content-free his belief is.

Really full of himself! But how many under privileged/add/hd kids did he
read to/with this week. When was the last time he gardened with a class
of kids at a school. "create the new reality" ? The homeless vet here who
talks out loud to himself, or to invisible people, scares the residents of
this city; but people can have unheard conversations with an invisible
cloud being and they are "safe."

Argh!
