He Never Heard of the GOP
John Adams (in Thoughts on Government, April, 1776) gets it all wrong:
Fear is the foundation of most governments; but it is so sordid and brutal a passion, and renders men in whose breasts it predominates so stupid and miserable, that Americans will not be likely to approve of any political institution which is founded on it.

Walther Rathenau got it right:
"Democracy means rule of the people only in the hands of a political people, in the hands of an uneducated and unpolitical people itís mere cliquism and narrow-minded bar-room politics.
(Walther Rathenau was Foreign Minister of Germany during the Weimar Republic, assassinated 1922 by members of a terrorist right-wing organisation bent on saving the fatherland)
