Just heard John Edwards ending his campaign where he started it, in the New Orleans that George W. Bush walked away from like so much road kill.
Or did Edwards really drop out? Here are his words: “Today I am suspending our campaign.” Hmm. Things suspended are “temporarily prevented from continuing,” according to my dictionary. Ted Williams’s head, for instance, is almost surely dead but may possibly, just possibly, be only in a state of suspended animation.
What does all this mean? Probably nothing, but still… The family hopes.
Would you call this a backing-out kind of speech?

Posted by: Buck on January 30, 2008 4:38 PMFrom what I've read, "suspend" is a word one uses to continue to receive matching funds from the federal election folks. If you out-and-out quit, matching funds stop coming.
Plus, since I know at least two people (my mother and I) will vote for Edwards next Tuesday no matter what, he might end up with more delegates than he has now. That could affect things down the line.
Posted by: Chuck Dupree on January 30, 2008 8:31 PMAt last a friendly Edwards comment. Edwards is owed matching funds and they have not been paid out because there is a question as to whether the remaining two people involved with matching funds can pay them out or do we have to wait for the rest of the members to be put in place. If we have to wait it will be a long time before Edwards gets his funds because the man Bush wants on the panel ..... well the Dems sure don't want him on there. I hope people continue to vote for him or write his name in.
The local Raleigh news services, who have had next to nothing to say about Edwards and have said it with venom, were tripping all over themselves to report his leaving the campaign and commenting on his wife's health yesterday. I am truly concerned about the type of campaigns Obama and Clinton will run from here on out and I am sad but glad at the moment Edwards campaign is only suspended.
Posted by: tdr on January 31, 2008 7:19 AMI've heard that a candidate who drops out retains delegates won before withdrawing. If Edwards picks up votes on February 5, will he be awarded delegates?
