Martha at Demisemiblog calls our attention to this essay from Majikthise in which Lindsay Beyerstein counts the way Bush's governance qualifies for the F word.
Not really provoctive anymore, of course. We have lived in a fascist state for several years now; the only difference being that the true nature of this fascism has come to light over the past year. I guess I'm getting too old. I even remember when fascism was supposed to be a bad thing. WWII, and all that. We are very much in a condition of post history.

Martha, regarding other items on your referring page, I'm the first generation that doesn't speak Pennsylvania Dutch and the second generation that doesn't speak it as a first language. At least 10 years ago, essays from "my kind" made fun of the English-only argument. The language is similar to Yiddish; when I first moved to Philadelphia and rode buses and mingled a lot, I marveled at how many Pennsylvania Dutch had moved into the city because I heard it often and could make out phrases here and there. Sort of like the movie "Witness," although I was old enough that I should have known better.
Posted by: Joyful Alternative on July 8, 2006 10:59 AMThings being as they are, I'm afraid we'll just revert once again to "fascist lite" for a while but still continue on our merry march towards the dustbin of history.
