Praise The Lord

Evangelical leaders are getting on board to fight global warming, not only with their mouths but with their pocket books. The usual suspects, of course, are not on board.

These include Charles W. Colson, the founder of Prison Fellowship Ministries; James C. Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family; and Richard Land, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

This latter group always has the rapture to fall back on. So, why worry? The rest of us can just stew in our juices.

Dobson has a poor reputation amongst progressives, perhaps quite deserved...but almost all the radio 1-minute morning spots I've heard by him on the local (KSFO) fascist talk station have been moderate, reasoned, and sensitive to children; the gist being to let them learn to think for themselves and have fun, etc. Back off on the physical discipline, respect for elders must be earned by behaving in a respectful manner to children, etc. Not at all what you'd get from the fire 'n brimstone apocalyptical Koresh fringe nutcase fundies, so it would be wrong to lump this guy and his outfit with that ilk. Dobson may be a manipulative empire maker, but he's no hillbilly: he's complex and sophisticated. That's been my take so far, anyway. Point is, he performs a worthwhile function in actually toning down some of the more fanatical bible bangers. At least I hope that's what goes on in that huge realm in the usa.
