Ending Old Patterns

It has been 17 years since Bush the Elder hit Dukakis with the Willie Horton smear. Seventeen years is a long time, but finally, we’ve learned:

The Democratic National Committee requested public records from state agencies on their dealings with Gov. Mitt Romney, who may run for president in 2008. His spokesman called it the work of a “dirty tricks attack squad.”

The DNC is seeking similar records on at least 10 other potential candidates for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, spokesman Luis Miranda said.

Of course, it’s a tremendous advantage when your party chairman is not the standard fundraising hack (think Ron Brown/Terry McAuliffe), but rather is a quick learner who knows the value of vicious and unfair oppo because his own promising presidential campaign was derailed by it.

It's so nice to have the DNC actually functioning as a campaign organization and not just an Abramoff-type outfit that raises money in big chunks to give in big chunks to connected (i.e., incompetent) "Democratic strategists." Thanks, Doc!
